In 16th-century England, the corrupt King Henry VIII (Robert Shaw) betrays the Roman Catholic Church to divorce his wife and marry his latest conquest Anne Boleyn (Vanessa Redgrave). Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield) is then forced to choose between his principles and duty to his heretical king, who has begun executing the treasonous with increasing frequency. Robert Bolt’s successful play was not considered a hot commercial property by Columbia Pictures–a period piece about a moral issue without a star, without even a love story. Perhaps that’s why Columbia left director Fred Zinnemann alone to make A Man for All Seasons, as long as he stuck to a relatively small budget. The results took everyone by surprise, as the talky morality play became a box-office hit and collected the top Oscars for 1966. At the play’s heart is the standoff between King Henry VIII (Robert Shaw, in young lion form) and Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield, in an Oscar-winning performance). Henry wants More’s official approval of divorce, but More’s strict ethical and religious code will not let him waffle. More’s rectitude is a source of exasperation to Cardinal Wolsey (Orson Welles in a cameo), who chides, “If you could just see facts flat on without that horrible moral squint.” Zinnemann’s approach is all simplicity, and indeed the somewhat prosaic staging doesn’t create a great deal of cinematic excitement. Jacques Offenbach died with his masterpiece not quite finished, and that has made The Tales of Hoffmann a predestined victim for adapters who have dropped some numbers, inserted others, altered the plot, fiddled with the casting, and changed the order of scenes. It has survived and kept its essential identity through many adaptations because its music is so witty and compelling, its imagination so vivid and varied, its story of the poet Hoffmann’s unhappy loves so intriguing they can transcend such tinkering.
A critical performing edition prepared by musicologist Michael Kaye has made it possible to come close to Offenbach’s original intentions after more than a century of misunderstanding, and major companies have begun to use that edition, but so far no universally satisfying production of it has reached video. An Opera de Lyon production, using Kaye’s research but with a radically untraditional staging, has won wholehearted approval from some fans but unequivocal rejection from more.
As adaptations go, this 1951 film is the best compromise currently available on video and will always be a classic in its own right, even when a more faithful treatment becomes available. It drops some of Offenbach’s music and includes some that is spurious, and it changes the plot (Hoffman’s beloved Stella is made a dancer–Moira Shearer–not a singer). But at least it treats the story with affection, imagination, and technical expertise. The music presents only highlights of the score, but it is in the hands of a great conductor, Sir Thomas Beecham. The movie is essentially the work of the same team that produced The Red Shoes (directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger); it has the same kind of imaginative appeal and its technical resourcefulness is still exciting, still on the cutting edge despite its age. I expect eventually to add a more faithful Tales of Hoffmann to my video collection, but I will never stop enjoying this one. –Joe McLellan

Penny Marshall’s popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men’s baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall’s movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They’re all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O’Donnell. It’s a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall’s never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie’s filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there’s no crying in baseball! –Jeff Shannon

Epiphany
T-Pain opens the liner notes to his hotly anticipated second disc with a couple of helpful definitions: An epiphany is “the manifestation of a supernatural being” (definition No. 1) or “a sudden moment of insight or revelation” (No. 2), the opening page puts forth. Because most of the R&B record-buying world knows that T-Pain is not a supernatural being, but a stylish and inventive singer from Tallahassee, it would seem the second definition inspired the title–T-Pain probably felt flashes of inspiration when laying out the lyrics. A single spin ought to convince listeners a little of both factored in, though: Songs like “Bartender” and “Buy U a Drank” send out a southern hip-hop vibe silky enough to be considered a revelation (thanks partially to Akon, who pitches in on “Bartender”). And because the entire album leans hard on the vocoder, tracks such as opener “Tallahassee Love,” a nod to Tupac’s “California Love,” sound otherworldly, a la definition one. Throughout, T-Pain hands out hooks like there’s been a two-for-one sale. Maybe they came to him in a series of epiphanies. Or maybe a benevolent R&B being–some supernatural force who knows how to make a hit record–whispered them in his ear. –Tammy La Gorce
